M49 closure update as emergency repairs take place after serious four-vehicle crash

A stretch of the M49 is set to remain closed until 3pm this afternoon (Friday, November 29). National Highways said that emergency resurfacing work is taking place following a multi-vehicle crash yesterday evening which left one person in hospital.

Emergency services were called to the collision on the northbound carriageway of the M49, which links the M4 with the M5, at around 5.50pm. Avon and Somerset Police said the serious crash involved four vehicles.

The motorway remains shut heading northbound between the M5 at junction 18 and the M4 at junction 22. A diversion route is in place for motorists to follow.

National Highways said: "The M49 in Gloucestershire is closed northbound between the M5 (J18) and the M4 (J22) for emergency resurfacing following an earlier collision which resulted in a fuel spillage.

"National Highways area team are on scene. It is expected that the road will remain closed until at least 3pm."

Police called to four-vehicle crash

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said yesterday evening: "Emergency services are at the scene of a four-vehicle collision which has closed the M49 northbound. Police, fire, and ambulance crews were alerted to the incident at about 5.50pm on Thursday 28 November.

"The road is expected to remain closed to enable the emergency response, and to allow for collision investigation, vehicle recovery, and any road repairs.

"One person has gone to hospital by ambulance with injuries which are not currently believed to be either life-threatening or life-changing."

Diversion route

National Highways has confirmed that a diversion route is in place for drivers to follow. They are advised to continue on the M5 northbound to junction 16.

From here, they should join the M4 westbound before travelling to junction 22. Drivers are then able to continue their journey normally.
