Drivers face a £1,000 fine for a common habit this winter even though it's not illegal

Drivers face £1,000 fine for habit many do in winter as temperatures fall even though it's not illegal

Motorists have been cautioned about a common winter habit that could land them in hot water if they don't take the right precautions. Vaping, which has grown increasingly popular in recent years, is often done while driving.

Although not illegal, it can cause issues. The vapour produced can quickly fill the car and obstruct the driver's view. This is usually less problematic in spring, summer, and autumn when drivers are more likely to open their windows to let out the vapour.

However, in freezing conditions, drivers may be reluctant to do so. They are being reminded to ensure the vapour clears quickly and their view isn't blocked. According to law, anyone distracted or unable to clearly see the road ahead could be committing an offence under Section 41D of the Road Traffic Act, reports Birmingham Live.

Drivers could face fines up to £1,000 and three penalty points if their driving conditions are deemed unsafe. Sergeant Carl Knapp of the Sussex Road Policing Unit warns: "The smoke caused by vapes is a distraction and the consequences of them can be dire, all it takes is a moment to become distracted and potentially cause a crash and even worse, a fatality."

He strongly advises drivers to pay full attention to the roads, as any distractions could have severe consequences.
