A 37-year-old Nottingham man has appeared in court having been charged with murdering a fellow inmate at HMP Nottingham and attempting to murder a man in Edwalton. Dressed in a grey tracksuit Andrew Thorpe spoke only to confirm his name when he appeared over a video-link from HMP Nottingham into Nottingham Crown Court.

The defendant, of St Ann’s, is accused of carrying out the murder of the fellow prisoner on Friday, June 28. He was initially charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm but the victim has since died from his injuries and Thorpe has now been charged with his murder.

The separate attempted murder charge relates to an incident in Edwalton. Officers were called to a house in Wheatcroft Drive, at 12.45am on Wednesday, May 29, after reports a man had been repeatedly stabbed.

The victim, a man in his 20s, was hospitalised following the alleged assault where he remained in a stable condition for a number of days. The defendant, of Alfred Street North, St Ann’s, was later charged with attempted murder and possession with intent to supply a Class A drug.

Simon Eckersley, defending, asked for the charges to both alleged offences not to be put to his client but he will be expected to enter pleas at his next hearing on December 5.

Speaking at the time of the Edwalton incident, Detective Inspector Simon Harrison, overseeing the investigation, said: "This was a very serious assault and I am pleased we have now been able to charge a suspect in this case. Our investigation will now continue.”

Inspector Tim Cuthbert, district commander for Rushcliffe, added: "I would like to thank residents for their co-operation while officers conducted inquiries following this incident. We are treating this as an isolated incident."
