A police hunt is underway after a man was stabbed when he tried to help a teenager who was being chased by a group of youths. The man, who police say is known to the teenage victim, was stabbed in the stomach in Beecham Avenue, on the border of Thorneywood and St Ann's.

The man has been taken to hospital and his condition is understood to be serious. Police say the man had intervened to help a teenager on an e-scooter who was being chased by a group of youths.

Police were initially called to reports of an attempted robbery after the teenager was chased along Marmion Road, on the edge of Carlton and Thorneywood, at 6.25pm on Sunday, October 27.

This was before the man attempted to help the teen in nearby Beecham Avenue.

Officers are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any relevant CCTV to contact the force. Officers have been analysing CCTV footage and making house-to-house inquiries in the area overnight.

Detective Inspector Paul Shortt, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We are treating this incident with the utmost seriousness as it has left a man in hospital with serious injuries. Officers are following a number of lines of inquiry and members of the public can expect to see a police presence in the area during the rest of the day.

“Neighbourhood teams are also carrying out additional patrols to provide reassurance while investigations continue. If anyone has any concerns, please speak to an officer. A team of detectives is working hard to understand exactly what happened in the moments before, during and after the incident."

He continued: "It is really important anyone who was in the area and has relevant information or footage gets in touch. We believe there were a number of witnesses to the incident and we want to take their accounts of what happened.”

Residents living on the streets surrounding Carlton Road recalled seeing a large police presence in the area at the time of the incident. They added that a police cordon was in place near the Lidl supermarket on the busy road, while a National Police Air Service plane was circling the area.

Wesley Bowen, 84, said: “We saw the blue flashing lights but we don’t know what happened. We saw a police cordon as well in the car park and the road going into Lidl’s car park was cordoned off. I couldn’t tell you how long they were here for. The area is alright usually, it’s quiet.”

A resident on Carlton Road, who wished to remain anonymous, added: “I saw the police cars but I don’t know exactly what happened. I came back from work and just saw the police cars here. We’ve had a few incidents around here over the last year.”

Another resident, who also wished to keep his identity private, recalled hearing the police plane. He said: “I kept hearing a rumbling for a while and I was convinced it wasn’t just thundering. I then saw people say it might have been a police plane.”

Amy Clarke, 78, added: “I was out with my dog and saw all the blue lights, there were a lot of police cars there but I didn’t really want to get close because I didn’t know what happened so I went straight home. I could hear some kind of plane or helicopter as well but I don’t know if it was related to this.”
