CCTV shows moment Nottingham drunk driver smashes into lamppost, flips in the air and lands on drive
by Martin Naylor, Joel Moore · NottinghamshireLiveDramatic CCTV footage shows a young Nottingham drink driver's car lift up off the ground as it struck a lamppost at speed and almost hit the front of a house. In the clip, captured from a neighbouring house, Lindami Mremi’s white Fiat Punto is seen crashing at speed into the post and some chains at the front of a property in Robin’s Wood Road, Aspley.
The car suffered serious damage and repair work to the property cost more than £4,500. At the time the 23-year-old had just insured himself to drive a friend’s car home from a so-called bottomless brunch and thought that he would be under the legal drink-drive limit if he kept eating.
Appearing at Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday, December 11, the defendant, of Bulwell, was spared an immediate prison term. Handing Mremi a 24-week suspended jail term, Recorder Richard Davis said he was "very lucky you did not kill someone".
Footage of the crash, which happened at 2.25am on June 17 last year, has been shared with Nottinghamshire Live. It shows Mremi drive directly into the lampost, causing the car to launch into the air and landing just outside a house.
After a few seconds neighbours can be seen walking across the street to offer their help. Mremi, of Newmarket Road, Bulwell, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and drink-driving and has no previous convictions or cautions of any kind.
He also admitted a Bail Act offence when he failed to turn up at court on a previous occasion. Mremi's jail term was suspended for 18 months. He was also ordered to undertake 20 rehabilitation sessions, was disqualified him from driving for a year and told to pay £1,800 compensation at £100 per month.
