Six easy ways to keep your home warm this winter without turning on the heating
by Sam Cooper, Hannah Giacardi · NottinghamshireLiveAs the summer season fades into memory, many Brits are preparing for a cold spell and possible snow. That can inevitably leads us to turn up the heating.
However, with the energy price cap rising from October 1, and the Winter Fuel Payment no longer accessible for millions, Brits are seeking ways to reduce heating expenses. To address this issue, a man known only as @thatpropertyguy on social media, shared his top six tips on TikTok for keeping his home cosy without adjusting the thermostat.
1. Bleed your radiators: This property expert suggests that one simple method to immediately enhance your home's energy efficiency is to bleed your radiators.
Bleeding radiators expels trapped air that can obstruct hot water circulation, diminishing the heat output of your radiators. Consequently, bleeding them boosts their efficiency, meaning you won't need to increase your heating as much.
To bleed your radiators, turn off the heating, open the bleed valve, listen for the escaping air, and then close it again, reports the Mirror.
2. Open the oven door after cooking: After cooking, leave your oven door slightly open to release heat into the room at no extra cost. Make sure the oven is turned off to prevent wasting energy.
3. Closing curtains: A TikToker who is savvy about saving costs has shared another simple step to warm your home - close your blinds and curtains. He explained that this small change helps keep heat in the room, making your home more energy efficient.
4. Foil behind radiators: Placing aluminium foil behind your radiators is another excellent way to retain heat. The property enthusiast explained that this is because the foil reflects radiator heat back into the room, preventing it from escaping through the wall.
You might already have aluminium foil in your kitchen cupboard, but if not, you can get it from the supermarket for about £1.75.
5. Leaving a gap between radiator and sofa: Creating a gap between your radiator and sofa is another easy trick to make your home cosier. This is because it allows heat to circulate freely around the room, while also protecting the sofa from damage.
6. Shut doors behind you: An effortless tip to keep your home warm is to close all doors behind you, preventing heat from escaping rooms and reducing the need to turn up the heating. This advice comes from a TikToker whose video has gone viral with over 2.2 million views.
The comments section of the video was abuzz with users sharing their experiences. One user exclaimed: "I didn't know the foil trick, that's ace! " Another commented: "My house is like an icebox, so I'm now trying the foil trick."
A third remarked: "I always leave my oven door open after use, I thought I was the only one to do this".
