A paedophile who raped and abused three different Nottingham girls has been handed a prison sentence lasting more than three decades. In an impact statement, one of the victims described Keith Wain as “the Devil” and “the monster in my head”.

In hers, another said the 50-year-old was the person who “put the scars on my arms” she inflicted herself through self-harm due to the mental turmoil she suffered as a result of his sexual abuse of her. And each of them were in the public gallery at Nottingham Crown Court to see their tormentor being told he may spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Handing him a 33-year sentence, Judge Michael Auty said: “Your offences have destroyed the lives of three bright, articulate and courageous young women.

“This was cruel and sadistic abuse and you robbed them of so many things. “You robbed them of their innocence, you robbed them of their childhoods.

“You robbed them of the hopes and dreams any child undoubtedly has as they blossom into childhood. You were cruel, cynical and manipulative and there is now severe psychological harm on all three victims each of whom was undoubtedly particularly vulnerable.

“You could have admitted this when you were arrested by the police, that would have been the courageous thing to do. It would have spared them the mental anguish of worrying about the trial.

“You have escaped a life sentence today, they have not.” David Eager, prosecuting, said each of the victims were targeted by Wain when they were young teens.

He said he sexually abused them, then raped them and then told them what he did was “our little secret” and that if they told anyone else what had taken place they would get into trouble.

He said one of them finally plucked up the courage to go to the police in her late teens and then an investigation discovered there were two other victims who also laid bare the abuse they suffered.

The defendant, of Lime Tree Road, Hucknall, waited until the week before his trial to plead guilty to counts of rape, assault by penetration and sexual activity with a child. He has 80 previous convictions for 193 offences but nothing related to sex.

In her impact statement read to the court by Mr Eager, one of the now adult women said: “I was just like an object. I took sleeping tablets to take away the nightmares and have had hours of therapy but still the pain is there.

“All you cared about was your pleasure. You are the monster in my head and the person in my nightmares.

“You are the Devil, pure evil.” The second woman, in her statement said: “How can one person ruin my life?

“You did not care about anyone and were only worried about what would happen to you. I was your toy.

“I wanted to kill myself so the pain would go away. The scars on my arms you put there.” And the third victim, in her statement, said: “I just kept it all in. I was scared that no-one would believe me.”

The sentence is made up of 30 years custody plus a three-year extended licence. It means Wain will not be eligible to apply for parole until he has served at least 20 years in prison.

As well as the jail term, the judge placed Wain on the sex offender register for life and handed him a lifetime sexual harm prevention order. James Varley, mitigating, said: “A week before the trial, Mr Wain and I met over a link to have a brief conference.

“In it he volunteered ‘I don’t want to put them through it, I know what I have done’. This will mean custody until he is a very old man but he must be sorry as he spared these young ladies (a trial).”
