Man stabbed in the head three times by housemate after he dropped his vape
by Rucsandra Moldoveanu · NottinghamshireLiveA man was left with three head wounds and a cut to his wrist after his housemate attacked him due to accidentally dropping his vape. The 23-year-old victim was attacked by Nyaia Lakaiko, 42, inside their shared accommodation on Surrey Drive, Mansfield, on June 15.
During the incident, Lakaiko became angry after hearing a loud thud coming from the next room, which Nottingham Crown Court was told was caused by the victim accidentally dropping a vape. He then started banging on the wall and shouting at the victim, who responded in the same manner.
Lakaiko, currently of no fixed address, then entered the 23-year-old's room seconds later and began his attack with a kitchen knife. A third housemate helped de-escalate the situation after the victim fled downstairs.
The victim suffered a cut his wrist and three head wounds, which were glued up at King’s Mill Hospital. Lakaiko was arrested and charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm.
While he was awaiting court proceedings, Lakaiko was also charged with breaking a bail condition after he failed to sign on at Mansfield Police Station on September 23. The man pleaded guilty to both offences and was jailed for 12 months, suspended for two years, when he was sentenced on Tuesday, December 10.
He must also attend 10 rehabilitation activity days as part of his sentence. A two-year restraining order was also imposed.
PC Jordan Brimelow, who led the investigation, said: "This was an appalling episode that left the victim fearing for his life. There is no excuse for the level of violence displayed by Lakaiko and I hope he takes the second chance afforded to him by the court.
"As is so often the case with knife crime, the consequences of this incident could have been far worse and therefore we will continue to take action against those who behave in such an appalling and dangerous manner."
