Simple actions to stop peace lillies turning yellow

by · NottinghamshireLive

Peace lilies are celebrated for their elegant white blooms but are also infamous for their occasionally capricious behaviour, even with diligent care. They are typically straightforward to maintain if their light and water requirements are met; however, they can perplexingly droop or yellow, confusing seasoned plant enthusiasts.

A recent post in the Help with Houseplants Facebook group reflected this puzzlement when a member exclaimed: "Help! I can't understand why my peace lily's leaves are turning yellow."

Fear not though, discoloured leaves in peace lilies usually signify a soil issue, and these plants are well-known for bouncing back quickly with proper attention. Some advice on the thread proposed that overwatering or excessive sunlight might be the culprits.

Finding the perfect location is key, as ample lighting can significantly enhance a peace lily’s health. Joanne Millward shared her enthusiasm for peace lilies in the Gardening UK Facebook group, saying: "Fell in love with the peace lily after seeing some posts on them. Sent it to my husband and he got me one. I love it."

A plant enthusiast sought the collective wisdom of fellow green-fingered individuals on how best to look after her peace lily, according to the Express. The overwhelming consensus is that while they thrive in bright locations, direct sunlight is a no-go for these plants, reports the Express.

Known for their expressive drooping when needing water, peace lilies do need attentive care. One individual advised, "Lots of light but not direct sunlight, only water when soil becomes dry-ish. I water mine once a week. Water from the bottom, not the top."

Meanwhile, another added to the conversation, "Peace lilies are very thirsty. Water as soon as you see the leaves lower, but ideally not droop as that creates stress for the plant."

Offering personal experience, one said: "They like a spot that is just back from very sunny. However, the best spot is one where they flower, for me it's in the hallway by the front door."

Coral Smith also contributed a tip, "Mine is years old and I keep it just inside the front door which is patterned glass. We have four flowers at the moment but it never stops flowering in this spot."

With proper attention, the right earthy mix, and ideal feed, peace lilies can indeed regain their luxuriant appeal.

Dawn, a gardening expert, emphasises the importance of pruning for plant health, particularly removing yellow leaves. She advises: "Cut the yellow leaves off at the base of the stem sometimes yellowing can be the old leaves as this will happen. Peace lilies are drama queens for sure. I water mine when she is 50 to 70 percent dry and she is thriving."
