Update on former Boots building in Carlton Square as new plans submitted

The pharmacy closed earlier this year

An update on the building of a former Boots pharmacy in a Nottinghamshire town has been revealed. Planning documents have been submitted to Gedling Borough Council for 19 Carlton Square, Carlton, where Boots used to be located.

The pharmacy, located on the ground floor of the building, closed earlier this year, while the upstairs units were used as offices. The new proposals detail the change of use of the first floor to create two one-bedroom flats.

The ground floor's retail use would be retained, the documents have confirmed. Access to the flats is made via an internal stair at the back of the property that can be accessed directly from the side car park.

Businesses in Carlton Square have had to overcome a number of hurdles following the closure of Wilko in 2023, which led to a reduction in footfall. The area then received another blow months later, in February, when Farmfoods closed its doors for seven weeks while it was extending into the Wilko unit.

In June, Gedling Borough Council officially accepted £20 million worth of funding after it was announced by then Chancellor Jeremy Hunt in his March budget. The money comes from the Government's towns fund project, which sees a 'town board' being set up to decide how money should be spent over the next decade.

Business owners in Carlton Square are among those hoping to benefit from the fund after being at the centre of a failed Levelling Up Fund bid in 2021. Funding totalling £350,000 from a local enterprise partnership was, however, then secured for the redevelopment of the square's car park.

The money, alongside £100,000 from the council, was also spent on CCTV equipment and a new pedestrian route to the shopping centre from Burton Road.
