A woman has died in a horror two-vehicle crash on a busy A-road. Blue light workers raced to the A71 between Newmilns and Darvel in Ayrshire shortly after 11am yesterday.

Sadly, the 27-year-old female driver of the Ford Focus Zetec was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, a 24-year-old man, was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow with non-life-threatening injuries.

The 52-year-old male driver of the silver Mercedes Vito was taken to Crosshouse University Hospital in Kilmarnock, also with non-life-threatening injuries. The road was shut down for crash investigation work and re-opened at around 9pm.

Police have launched a probe into the smash and have urged anyone who witnessed the collision or who has dash-cam footage from the area to get in touch.

Sergeant Martin Cunningham said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman who died at what is a difficult time for all. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and we are asking anyone who saw what happened to get in touch.

“In particular, if you were driving in the area at the time please check your dash-cam to see if you have anything that could help with our investigation.”

Anyone who can assist is asked to call Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 1148 of Thursday, 17 October, 2024.
