Former Paralympian Oscar Pistorius has reportedly started a new romantic relationship just months after being released on parole from prison.
The 38-year-old, once known as the "Blade Runner" for his athletic achievements using prosthetic legs, served nine years behind bars for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, at his home in Pretoria, South Africa.
The horrific incident, which occurred on Valentine’s Day in 2013, shocked the world. Pistorius claimed he mistook Reeva for an intruder and fired multiple shots through a locked bathroom door, killing her instantly with specialized "dum-dum" bullets. However, her family has always insisted the killing was intentional.
Initially convicted of culpable homicide, his charge was later upgraded to murder, and he was released on parole on January 5, 2024. Despite the media frenzy surrounding his release, Pistorius continues to assert that Reeva’s death, at age 29, was a tragic mistake.
According to reports from respected South African outlet Netwerk24, Pistorius is now in a relationship with Rita Greyling, a 33-year-old business management consultant from Wakkerstroom, Mpumalanga, and a long-time family friend. Sources close to the couple have confirmed their romantic involvement, though both are keeping the details private, says the Mirror.
Greyling’s family has also faced their own tragedies. In November 2022, her brother, Ghini, was linked to a devastating incident at Henbase Lodge, Morgenzon, where Willem Kruger, 29, drowned during a party. By December 2023, authorities had reclassified Kruger’s death from accidental to a murder investigation. Friends believe the shared trauma in their respective families brought Pistorius and Greyling closer, marking a new chapter for both of them.
Since his release, Pistorius has been living in a cottage on the grounds of his multi-millionaire uncle Arnold’s fortified mansion in Pretoria. He is reportedly avoiding public places and trying to reintegrate into society discreetly, focusing on volunteer work at a local Dutch Reformed Church. A source close to Pistorius shared, “He’s trying to rebuild his life in a low-key way, avoiding bars and public attention. For the past three months, the word has been that he’s dating again.”
While on parole, Pistorius remains under strict conditions. His movements are limited, and he must inform authorities if he leaves the area. He is subject to random checks for alcohol and drugs and is prohibited from owning a firearm or contacting Reeva Steenkamp’s mother or sister.
Finding employment has reportedly been a challenge for Pistorius, as potential employers consider him “toxic.” Instead, he spends his time cleaning and sweeping at the church his family has long attended. His parole period is set to end in 2029.
