Dumfries and Galloway Council’s headquarters will proudly light up in pink, purple, and teal next weekend.

It will join more than 70 landmarks across the UK in the Make 2nds Count’s Shine a Light initiative.

The patient and family-focused charity – dedicated to giving hope through clinical trial education, knowledge sharing, support and funding research into secondary (metastatic) breast cancer – aims to raise awareness of secondary breast cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The council buildings in English Street will be lit up on Sunday, October 13, which is the only day of the year dedicated to raising awareness on secondary breast cancer.

Make 2nds Count is seeking to raise awareness of the reality of incurable secondary breast cancer – also known as also known as stage four or advanced – highlighting the urgent need for greater awareness, support and funding for research.

The Dumfries community is invited to participate by visiting the council offices on October 13 to see the lights and share photos on social media using the hashtag #ShineALight, as well as engaging with the 1000 Truths stories on the Make 2nds Count website.

An estimated 61,000 people in the UK are living with this condition, which claims 1,000 lives every month.

Additionally, a recent survey showed that 38 per cent asked did not know what secondary breast cancer was, and 21 per cent did not know what symptoms to look for.
