Man dead and second injured after incident near Scots community centre

A police probe is underway after one man died and another was injured in an incident close to a Scots community centre.

The incident took place in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, this afternoon. Emergency services were scrambled to the scene amid reports of an alleged knife attack.

A huge police presence was seen in the area, as officers locked down the scene to begin their investigation. Photographs from the scene show the area taped off with a number of emergency services vehicles at the scene.

A 36-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, near to the town's Burnbank Centre, while a 59-year-old man was taken to hospital for treatment.

His condition is not known, and Police Scotland officers are now investigating the incident, who confirmed the drama unfolded at around 3.50pm on Monday, October 21, 2024.

Road closures have now been put in place, on Purdie Street and Whitehill Road, until after midday tomorrow, Tuesday, October 21 as Police Scotland detectives continue to probe the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 3.50pm on Monday, October 21, 2024, we received a report of two men injured within the Burnbank Centre, Hamilton. Emergency services attended, and a 36-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"A 59-year-old man was taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances of the incident."

A spokesperson for South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture said: "We will do all we can to help police with their enquiries, but it would be inappropriate to comment further on an ongoing police investigation."
