Car flips '30ft down embankment' into Scots river as cops hunt hit and run driver

A car flipped into a river following a horror hit and run crash on a road in Aberdeenshire.

Police have launched a probe after the incident on the A90, near the Lintmill Brae roundabout in Ellon, at around 6.45am on Tuesday November 12. The occupants of a white Audi Sport reported being struck by another vehicle that left the scene before emergency services arrived.

The driver, a 41-year-old man, and a 36-year-old male passenger were both taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for treatment. It's understood the Audi plunged 30ft down an embankment following the collision and a picture taken from the scene showed the vehicle upside down in a shallow river as a result.

On a local Facebook page, a family member said: "On Tuesday at roughly 6.30am John was travelling as a passenger in his pal Eddie's white Audi A1 on the A90 at the straight before Ellon, just past the lay by where Maggies burger van sits, when a car hit them from behind causing them to roll off the road, down a wooded embankment and dropped off a 30ft ledge where the car landed upside down in a river.

"By some kind of miracle they managed to get themselves out of the car and back up to the road where they thought the driver of the other car would be waiting having called the emergency services but when they got there, there was NO ONE, the driver drove off and for all they know they could have left them for dead!

"John and Eddie had to call the emergency services for themselves and once they arrived and saw the distance the car rolled and the wreckage both the police and paramedics couldn't believe they survived. I'm reaching out hoping anyone travelling that road that morning that might have seen the incident and may have information on the other car to come forward or call the police. It would be criminal for them to get away with leaving two fathers, husbands for dead and not at the very least calling for help!"

Police are searching for the driver and they are appealing for information. Constable Ross Hay said: “Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances of this crash.

“I am appealing to anyone who was on the road around that time and who may have witnessed the crash and has not already spoken to officers to get in touch. I would also appeal to anyone with any dashcam footage which could help our enquiries to contact us.”
