A trade union official booted by Labour after being accused of liking ‘racist’ social media posts has also left her post at NHS Fife. Wilma Brown is moving on to a “new adventure” after resigning from the health board.

Brown had been Labour’s general election candidate in her home town seat of Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath until weeks before the campaign began. But her Westminster ambitions ended over claims she shared offensive comments on X, formerly known as Twitter.

One post described former First Minister Humza Yousaf as "Hamas Yousless" and another told an Indian man he would "never be an Englishman".

Two investigations were launched, one by Scottish Labour and another by her trade union employer Unison, where she was a senior official. Labour dumped her as a candidate but Unison has not commented about the resolution of their own probe.

However, the local Unison branch at NHS Fife, where Brown was based, revealed her departure earlier this month in a glowing tribute. They wrote: “Our Branch would like to express its huge thanks and appreciation to our founding member Wilma Brown who has taken the decision to move on to a new adventure in healthcare and has resigned from NHS Fife.

“We would like to wish her all the best in her new role and thank her for her continued commitment to our branch and members. She will be sorely missed by everyone who had the pleasure of working with her. We cannot underestimate the pivotal role she plays not only in our branch but across the whole of UNISON Scotland.”

The SNP said at the time of the controversy that the shared tweets were “deeply offensive” and “racist”.

Unison and NHS Fife have been contacted.
