Dumfries and Galloway residents have been urged to be aware of a benefits scam.

Text messages have been sent to a number of people in the region with a link that appears to ask them to apply for Living Welfare payments.

However, Dumfries and Galloway Council has posted on Facebook: “These messages are NOT from us or any of our partner organisations – they are scams.

“Do not click any links in these messages.”

Anyone who receives a text they think is a scam is encouraged to forward it – free of charge – to Ofcom at 7726. Anyone who has lost money or has been hacked should contact Police Scotland on 101.
