A Labour MP has been filmed ranting at a member of the public during an altercation in the street. The video shows former shadow minister Mike Amesbury standing over a male laid out on the ground, pointing at him and yelling: "You won't ever threaten me again."

When an eyewitness points out that Mr Amesbury is the MP for Runcorn as he's walking away, he goes around and confronts the man again, shouting: "Yes I am, and you won't threaten the MP ever again, will you?"

The incident is understood to have taken place in Frodsham, Cheshire, reports the Mirror. Mr Amesbury said: “Last night, I was involved in an incident that took place after I felt threatened on the street following an evening out with friends.

“This morning, I contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what happened during this incident. I will not be making further public comment but will, of course, cooperate with any enquiries if required by Cheshire Police.

“I remain fully committed to working hard for the people of Runcorn and Helsby, and am determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community.”

According to the Manchester Evening News, Mr Amesbury met with Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner Dan Price earlier last night for a policing and community safety meeting.

Mr Amesbury had several shadow cabinet roles when Labour was in opposition, most recently serving as Minister for Building Safety and Homelessness from 2023 to the election.

In a statement Cheshire Police said: "At 2.48am on Saturday, October 26, police were called to reports of an assault in Frodsham. A caller reported he had been assaulted by a man in Main Street. Enquiries are ongoing."
