Nearly £30,000 is to be spent supporting exhibitions at Kirkcudbright Galleries.

The temporary exhibitions have been given signature event status by the council’s education, skills and community wellbeing committee.

And that means the local authority will provide an additional £28,000 to the programme next year.

Stranraer Oyster Festival will receive a similar amount after also being granted signature event status.

A report for the meeting claimed the two events each boost the region’s economy by at least £1 million a year.

Committee chair, Councillor Maureen Johnstone, said: “I’d like to congratulate the Oyster Festival and the council’s own Kirkcudbright Galleries for the contribution they make to culture, heritage and tourism in our region.

“Their designation as signature events of Dumfries and Galloway is completely merited and will add to our region’s reputation for hosting wonderful festivals and events.”
