A toddler is fighting for his life in hospital following a bloodbath knife attack which saw him, a schoolgirl and a woman brutally stabbed.

Witnesses said there was "blood everywhere" and that the screams of a young girl and a woman rang out after the triple stabbing on Friday night.

Police were called to the frenzied knife attack at around 5.30pm and discovered a woman, in her 30s, a boy, believed to be two, and a girl, thought to be eight, injured.

They were rushed to hospital for treatment to their stab wounds while a man, in his 40s, was arrested at the scene. The toddler is said to be in a serious condition.

The suspect was also rushed to hospital after he is said to have "taken unwell". He has since been discharged from hospital and is in police custody.

The Mirror reports the incident took place in First Avenue, Dagenham, East London, last night. A witness has told of hearing shouting and seeing a woman “covered in blood”.

They told The Sun: "About 5.30pm I heard shouting - I looked out of the window and I saw a lady covered in blood. She was very distraught, she was with a little girl.

"It’s shocking - it’s not something that happens in this area. Kids literally play outside in the street, that’s how safe it is. I look at it as a personal tragedy - but it’s so sad.”

Another person said: “My little nephew was playing out and he ran in saying he could see blood everywhere. When I came out, there was a woman running down the street with a girl. It didn’t seem real - I just phoned the ambulance straight away.

"I feel like I’m still in shock." A further witness, referring to the arrest, said: "He came out of the house and locked the door so no one could get in.. The police arrived pretty quickly, and he was arrested outside."

Aerial images from the scene captured a huge emergency services response, with at least eight police cars lining up and down the residential street. A rapid response vehicle was also reportedly deployed by London's Air Ambulance.

Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford, responsible for policing in Barking and Dagenham, said: "This is a truly shocking attack and I want to thank local residents for their assistance and patience while we deal with this incident.

"At this early stage, we believe those involved were known to each other and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.

"A crime scene will remain in place for some time while our officers carry out vital work and you will see an increased policing presence in the area over the coming days.
