Children in Culgruff House Group at Crossmichael Primary have worked hard throughout the year to earn an Eco Schools Green Flag from Keep Scotland Beautiful.

The school’s eco group is made up of children in P1 to P7 who work together to identify improvements that could be made to ensure Crossmichael Primary is an Eco School.

The eco group focused on three main areas throughout the year – reducing litter in the playground, increasing knowledge of climate change among pupils and staff and growing more produce to use in school cooking and baking projects.

To achieve these aims, the children had a variety of roles and responsibilities, including: a weekly litter pick around the playground which was then weighed and monitored; learning more about climate change by joining online lessons and displaying posters around the school on ways to reduce climate change; and preparing the raised beds to plant fruit and vegetables such as potatoes, cabbages, leeks, radishes and tomatoes.

The children used this produce to create delicious homemade dishes.

An application form was submitted to Keep Scotland Beautiful where they were able to share all the wonderful things they did, and are continuing to do, at Crossmichael Primary.

The feedback was very positive, and all staff and children are extremely proud of their efforts.
