Police have issued an update after a baby girl was attacked by a dog believed to be an XL bully. She remains in serious condition while two people arrested in connection with the incident have been bailed.

Kent Police said in an update issued on December 13 that an 18-year-old man and a 76-year-old woman who were arrested have been bailed while inquiries continue. Cops raced to Hawkinge, Kent, on Wednesday at 2.23pm after reports that the eight-month-old girl was bitten by a dog, thought to be that of the banned breed.

Ambulance crews raced to the scene and the infant was airlifted to a London hospital. Police said in an update today that the infant remains in hospital in a serious condition, reports the Mirror.

The dog was seized and killed, while an 18-year-old man and a 76-year-old woman - who were arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control - were bailed on Friday, the force confirmed. Kent Police said its inquiries into the incident are ongoing.

Police and forensics officers were spotted at the scene on Wednesday evening, along with nine patrol cars. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.

A spokesperson previously said: "Kent Police was called at 2.23pm on Wednesday to a report that an infant had been bitten by a dog inside a property on Siskin Close, Hawkinge near Folkestone. Officers attended along with South East Coast Ambulance Service and an eight month old girl was airlifted to a London hospital where she remains in a serious condition.

"The dog was seized and destroyed. An 18-year-old man and a 76-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control. They remain in custody while enquiries continue."

From February 1 this year, it became a criminal offence to own the XL Bully breed in England and Wales without an exemption certificate. Anyone who owns one of the dogs must have had the animal neutered, have it microchipped and keep it muzzled and on a lead in public, among other restrictions.
