Van crashes, catches fire

Witnesses say explosions and flames could be seen erupting from a van that appeared to have collided into the back of a Rutland grocery store on Saturday evening.

Firefighters, police and paramedics attended the incident, which happened before 6 p.m. behind the Save-On-Foods at Pemberton Road and Gray Road.

A video sent to Castanet shows black smoke and flames pumping from the top of a white van. An onlooker said of about 6:30 p.m., there was still some smoke coming from the vehicle.

It’s unknown if there were any injuries sustained as a result of the collision or fire.

FortisBC crews were also seen responding to the incident. According to the FortisBC website, a vehicle crash caused a power outage that has impacted about nine customers.

There is not yet an estimated time for power to be restored.
