Rental housing near UBCO

A new 21-unit mixed-use apartment is being proposed for Academy Way just south of the UBC Okanagan campus.

Owners of the property are seeking a development permit for the property at 975 and 985 Academy Way for the four-storey, mixed-use commercial and residential apartment.

According to the application before Kelowna’s planning department, the development would be made up of 18 three-bedroom and three four-bedroom suites.

Three commercial units would be included on the main floor.

Parking for 37 vehicles would be provided at grade and within a one-level below ground parkade.

Spaces would also be available for long and short-term bicycle parking.

“The neighbourhood is experiencing growth alongside the university, leading to an increasing demand for residential services,” the application states.

“Strategically locating residential buildings near universities contributes to sustainable urban planning.

“It optimizes land use, reduces urban sprawl and encourages development that supports diverse community needs.”

Internal city staff will review the application before it is forwarded to council for a decision.
