Nelson Police said that a driver was given a driving ban following a tip from a member of the public.

Officers were called Saturday by a woman witnessing two males smoking drugs before getting into their vehicle.

The woman was concerned about the man driving under the influence.

Nelson Police said that when officers arrived they noticed the vehicle backing out of the parking spot.

"The vehicle began driving Eastbound, then made a sharp left turn over the raised meridian of the road, knocked over a sign, and drove into the opposing lane of traffic and onto the sidewalk before police were able to pull it over," Nelson Police said in a release.

"Neither the driver nor the passenger of the vehicle had a valid Driver’s License."

Nelson Police were joined by Nelson RCMP at the scene to assist in conducting a Standard Field Sobriety Test on the driver, which the driver failed.

"A search of the vehicle uncovered drug paraphernalia and a bag of what appeared to be meth," police said. "The vehicle was impounded and the driver was given a driving prohibition."

Nelson Police would like to thank the member of the public who offered up the tip.

"Impaired driving causes thousands of accidents each year," Nelson Police said. "Her actions likely prevented worse damage or injury from occurring."
