The 2nd Annual Butterfly Run Kelowna raised more than $36,000 to support families dealing with infant loss, pregnancy loss and infertility.

The run was organized by a committee of bereaved mothers who first met at a support group event in Peachland, funded by the inaugural Butterfly Run in 2023.

“Our monthly gatherings became a place where we could grieve openly, say our babies' names out loud, and feel the support of others who truly understood. Thanks to the Butterfly Run, we’ve healed together and are now committed to helping other families facing unimaginable loss," said co-chair Katrina Yorston.

More than 300 people took part in the run through downtown Kelowna on Oct. 5 that honours babies gone too soon and families grappling with the loss.

"Last year, I was a participant, and it became a meaningful turning point in my life. Now, I have the incredible honor of helping bring us all together to remember our babies and hold hope for the children to come, said event co-chair Courtney Hiller.

Of the $36,600 raised, 80 per cent will go directly back into the Okanagan to support local initiatives such as one-on-one counselling, perinatal loss support groups, community connection events and bereavement boxes at local hospitals. The other 20 per cent will go towards administration and online resources.

It is estimated that 1 in 4 women will experience miscarriage or pregnancy loss (also known as perinatal loss) and that 1 in 6 Canadians experience infertility.
