There have been several social media posts recently about items being stolen from carports, yards and even lobby areas of apartments.

Video footage and pictures were posted of culprits as they carry out nefarious tasks.

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP Const. Chris Terleski said there has not been a noticeable spike in property crime lately, but it is an ongoing issue.

“Unfortunately, property crime still continues to impact our communities,” Terleski said.

“Property crime is largely a crime of opportunity and we need the public's help to combat it.”

Terleski said thieves prefer easy targets “so don't temp them. Lock your doors, secure your property, and remove valuables from and lock vehicles.

“Protect yourself, look out for your neighbours, and report any criminal or suspicious activity immediately and directly to police so we can investigate it.”

People are also encouraged to take up the 9 p.m. Routine.

At 9 p.m., or anytime before going to bed, residents should check that sheds, the garage and vehicles are locked.

People are also reminded to remove all valuables from vehicles and ensure tools, bikes and other property put away.
