'Attempted murder' update after Ivybridge fight

Police have confirmed a man who was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in Ivybridge in April of this year has been told there will be no further action against him.

Fore Street in Ivybridge was closed by police following an incident involving several men at around 9.30pm on Sunday April 28. The altercation resulted in ambulances and police vehicles attending after a man in his 50s was found suffering a suspected stab wound while another man was found suffering lacerations. Both men were taken to Derriford Hospital for treatment.

Over the next few days a number of arrests were made - a 35-year-old man from Ivybridge was arrested on suspicion of affray while a 30-year-old man from Ivybridge was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. In addition a 53-year-old man, also from Ivybridge, was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

PlymouthLive was later contacted by one of the injured men who claimed they lost "about five pints of blood and had to have blood transfusions". He also claimed that he later found what he believed was the weapon used to injure him in a rusting post box in Fore Street. He said he contacted police who had already carried out searches of the road, alerting them to its presence.

Devon and Cornwall Police later confirmed a knife was seized by police officers on May 7. They stated that inquiries were "ongoing to establish if this item was linked to the incident".

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police have now, in response to requests for updates by PlymouthLive, confirmed that two men who were arrested have been released with no further action to be taken against them - but three men now remain on bail.

The spokesperson said: "Police enquiries are continuing in relation to an incident which occurred on Fore street, Ivybridge on Sunday 28 April 2024.

"A 50-year-old man from Ivybridge was arrested on suspicion of Section 18 assault causing grievous bodily harm and affray. He remains police bail until 11 November.

"A 27-year-old man from Buckfastleigh was arrested on suspicion of Section 18 assault causing grievous bodily harm. He remains police bail until 21 January [2025].

"A 54-year-old man, from Ivybridge, was arrested on suspicion of Section 18 assault causing grievous bodily harm. He remains police bail until 28 January [2025].

"Following a review of the available evidence, a 31-year-old man from Ivybridge, who had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, has been released with no further action being taken in relation to this matter.

"A 35-year-old man, also from Ivybridge, who had been arrested on suspicion of affray has also been released with no further action being in relation to this matter."
