An MP called an urgent meeting over delays to journeys on the Tamar Bridge. Anna Gelderd, Labour MP for South East Cornwall says there are "growing concerns" from A38 drivers facing disruption during upgrades to a tidal flow lighting system.

She has urged action to be taken to stop disruption for motorists travelling between between Saltash and Plymouth, including those heading to appointments at Derriford Hospital. Ms Gelderd said she wanted to see "cross-border action" on the issue, including work with Plymouth City Council and MPs in neighbouring constituencies.

The meeting on Wednesday morning (September 18) brought together representatives from National Highways, Network Rail, and Great Western Railway alongside local councillors.

The MP said: "A reliable transport system is the backbone of our local economy and vital for the daily lives of residents. I’ve called this meeting to ensure that transport organisations hear directly from our communities.

"South East Cornwall is a beautiful place to live and work, but we face real challenges with our transport network. Our goal is to implement immediate solutions as well as long-term improvements to modernise and expand our transport infrastructure."

She highlighted key areas for improvements during the meeting, including:

  • Mitigation strategies to reduce congestion and minimise further disruption
  • Ensuring continued access to medical appointments at Derriford Hospital
  • Ongoing discussions around train timetable options
  • Clear communication between transport operators during the improvement works
  • Cross-border collaboration with Plymouth City Council and MPs to ensure coordinated action.
