Talks over Derriford Hospital's future to be held with Department of Health
by Annette Belcher · PlymouthLiveA crucial meeting 'to get things moving as quick as possible' for Derriford Hospital will be held between a Plymouth MP and the Department of Health.
Labour MP for Plymouth Moor View, Fred Thomas, asked the Deputy Prime Minister about investment into Derriford Hospital yesterday, Wednesday, November 20.
With the Prime Minister, Keir Starmer travelling back from the G20 summit, Prime Minister’s Questions was taken by Deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner.
Mr Thomas said he welcomes the Government’s “historic” £22.6 billion investment into the NHS, announced in the October Budget, saying: “It is our duty to rescue this country’s health service after 14 years of mismanagement, underinvestment and, unfortunately, also misleading announcements from the Party opposite”
The MP then asked the deputy prime minister to outline how new investment will make its way into Plymouth. In response, the Deputy Prime Minister said: “We’ll make sure that every corner of the UK can see the generosity and how that will improve services for them”.
Angela Rayner also promised Fred a meeting with the relevant health Minister to discuss how Plymouth will benefit from extra investment.
Speaking after PMQs, Fred Thomas MP said: "I know how important Derriford is to our community, and I was pleased to be able to raise it with the Deputy Prime Minister.
"Labour is increasing NHS spending by the largest amount since 2010. I want to see this money come into Derriford as soon as possible. I’m pleased to be arranging a meeting with the Department for Health to discuss how this will happen."
