Excitement was in the air at a Saltash primary school last week after legendary Plymouth street dancer Toby Gorniak made a special visit.

Toby, who set up Street Factory charity and company dance school over 18 years ago with his wife Jo, has been supporting youngsters for years, via access to hip-hop dance sessions, mentoring, clothing and even food and transport. It trained thousands of young people and had its own dance crews

Their work during the Covid pandemic lockdowns led to them being nominated for the hugely prestigious Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Award in the Lockdown Heroes category. Mr Gorniak was awarded an MBE in 2018.

Now, he's shared his skills with children and staff at Brunel Primary and Nursery Academy. The day was not only filled with energetic dance routines but also infused with meaningful discussions about life’s core values.

As Toby engaged with the children, he shared his inspiring philosophy centered around five key elements: respect, love, peace, unity, and having fun.

"These are the foundations of a good life,” he told the pupils, encouraging them to embody these values both in dance and in their daily interactions.

His message resonated deeply with the Brunel community, emphasising how these principles are integral to fostering a supportive and thriving environment.

Head teacher Darren Woolner said the atmosphere in the school was "electric, with students buzzing with excitement as they learned new dance moves while also reflecting on Toby’s powerful words".

“It was amazing! I loved learning the dance and listening to him talk about being respectful to each other,” said Amy, a Year 5 student.

Parents and staff also echoed the sentiments shared by the pupils. “Toby’s energy is contagious,” said a parent of two Brunel pupils. “He not only taught them some fantastic moves but also instilled values that are so important for our children to learn. It’s great to see them inspired like this.”

Throughout the day, Toby led workshops for various year groups, each tailored to promote teamwork and self-expression through dance. The hall echoed with laughter and applause as the pupils showcased their creativity and collaboration.

“It was wonderful to see the whole school community come together,” remarked Mr Woolner. “The buzz around school was incredible, and it’s clear that the lessons they learned will stay with them long after today.”

As the workshops wrapped up, Toby encouraged the children to take the lessons learned back into their everyday lives. “Dancing is a way to express yourself, but remember, it’s also about how you treat others and have fun together,” he said.

The impact of Toby Gorniak’s visit will be felt long into the future, reinforcing the values that lie at the heart of the Brunel community. With an unforgettable day filled with dance, laughter, and inspiration, the children left with not only new skills but also a deeper understanding of what it means to live by respect, love, peace, unity, and having fun.

Mr Woolner added: "Brunel Primary and Nursery Academy looks forward to building on this experience, continuing to create a nurturing environment where students can thrive both on and off the dance floor."
