Plymouth MP elected to the Defence Select Committee

The MP says he wants to ensure 'high level scrutiny'

MP Fred Thomas will join the The Defence Select Committee, a cross-party group of MPs that scrutinises the work of the Ministry of Defence. The committee will hold sessions and have opportunities to question the Secretary of State for Defence, Ministers, and other senior officials.

Previous committee inquiries have included topics such as Armed Forces Readiness, Space Defence and Service Accommodation. On Monday, Fred asked the Secretary of State for Defence, John Healey, about improvements to infrastructure in Plymouth, alongside increases in submarine capabilities that are 'vital to UK Defence.'

The MP said: “I am delighted to have been elected to the Defence Committee. Defence is personal for me, and the people I represent in Plymouth.

"I hope to use my position on the Defence Committee to ensure we have high level scrutiny on the procurement practices that have squandered billions of pounds and to look closely at how we look after our personnel.”
