Mangaluru: Two-day heritage week celebrations at old DC office building from November 30

The Dakshina Kannada district administration will organise a two-day “heritage week” programme at the old DC office building in Mangaluru on November 30 and December 1. It is to create awareness among children on the heritage value of the building.

The old building, which was the office of the then Collector during British rule having jurisdiction over Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Kasaragod districts, is still in good condition. Several years ago, the Deputy Commissioner moved to the adjoining new building. With a new building being constructed in Padil, Deputy Commissioner M.P. Mullai Muhilan is set to shift his office to Padil. The district administration intends to retain the old building for its heritage value.

“We want children to understand the heritage value of the old building. We also want suggestions from people on how tourists can be attracted to the building,” Mr. Muhilan told reporters on Thursday. The government intends to hold different programmes at the old building, he added.

As part of the programme, on Saturday, students from classes 3 to 10 will be called to the old building at 10 a.m. where they will do drawings of heritage buildings that they have seen. From 2.30 p.m. to 5 p.m. there will be urban sketching competition for college students on how the building can attract people.

There will be guided heritage walks between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. There will be panel discussion on sustainability at 4.30 p.m., which will be followed by prize distribution programme. The building will be lit up in the evening when music programme will be held between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.. There will be heritage exhibition on November 30 and December 1, Mr. Muhilan said.
