HC notice on plea for CBI probe into illegal phone tapping by Anvar
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduThe Kerala High Court on Friday (December 13, 2024) issued notice to the State government and Nilambur legislator P.V. Anvar on a writ petition seeking a CBI probe into the alleged illegal tapping of phones by the MLA.
The court issued the notice when a petition filed by Murugesh Narendran of Kollam, a businessman, came up for hearing. He pointed out that the MLA had publicly admitted to having intercepted telephone conversation of individuals including police officials, politicians and the petitioner.
The MLA’s act violated the fundamental right to privacy and freedom of speech and also violated the provisions of the Indian Telegraph Act, Information Technology Act and Official Secrets Act, the petitioner submitted. Despite clear admission of illegal action by the MLA, the authorities had failed to take any legal action against him.
The MLA had claimed that he did the tapping to expose crimes committed by higher police officials in collusion with political higher ups. Though he had infringed the fundamental right of various personally, the State government had not registered a case against on the petitioner’s complaint.
