Lok Sabha member Jagadish Shettar has urged the Union government to set up the proposed National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM) in Belagavi.

Mr. Shettar met Union Minister for Food Processing Industries Chirag Paswan in New Delhi on Thursday and submitted a request.

He said that Karnataka in general and Belagavi in particular have the necessary infrastructure and support structure for such a national institution.

The State’s farmers cultivate a wide range of crops, including food staple and commercial crops like millet, wheat, rice, pulses, sugarcane and tobacco. The State is also a top exporter of arecanut, coffee and spices like black pepper, cardamom and ginger.

“Belagavi has a strong network of industries, some of which are a century old. It is considered the cradle of hydraulics industries. It has the potential to become a hub for farm produce processing industries,” he said.

“A national food technology institute coming up in Belagavi will help a large section of society, including farmers, entrepreneurs, consumers, and others,” he added.

Mr. Shettar has in a release said that the Central Minister responded positively saying that he will ask his officers to consider the proposal and study the situation on the ground.
