Nine drug peddlers held in Coimbatore with methamphetamine, ganja

A total of nine persons were arrested with synthetic drug methamphetamine and ganja from Karumathampatty and Kavundampalayam in two separate cases registered by the Coimbatore District (Rural) and City Police on Thursday.

Karumathampatty police in Coimbatore rural arrested Rathinapuri residents Vishnu Kesavan, 28, alias Sibi and M. Ajithkumar, 28, with six kg of ganja and 2.5 grams of methamphetamine.

Based on specific information, the police conducted a vehicle check at Vadugankallipalayam near Karumathampatty on Thursday. Kesavan and Ajithkumar were found carrying the drugs. The police also seized a two-wheeler used by the two to transport the contraband. They were arrested and remanded in judicial custody.

Kavundampalayam police in the city arrested seven persons with eight kg of ganja. The arrested were identified as M. Vinoth, 34, of Ashok Nagar near Kavundampalayam, R. Vignesh, 26, of Saibaba Colony, K. Dinesh, 19, of K.K. Pudur, R. Rajesh, 24, of Kavundampalayam, R. Dhandapani, 18, of Kavundampalayam, M. Ragu, 22, of Kovilmedu and T. Thennilavan, 24, of Velandipalayam.

Investigators found out that the peddlers sourced ganja for ₹6,000 per kg from Odisha, smuggled it to Coimbatore on trains and sold the contraband for ₹50,000 for a kg. According to officials, the accused had procured around 18 kg of ganja in their last trip to Odisha. They landed in the police custody while selling the existing stock.

The seven persons were arrested and sent to judicial remand.
