Namakkal man falls for age-old money-doubling trick in Madurai
by S Sundar · The HinduWith online frauds gaining popularity across Tamil Nadu, a 62-year-old man from Namakkal district had fallen for an age-old trick of money-doubling and lost ₹ 3 lakh to a gang in Madurai last week.
The victim E. Sivasubramani of Rasipuram would have thanked his stars when he got the link of Logu through the neighbour (Senthil) of his acquaintance (Yuvaraja), who tipped him about making quick money.
“Logu had told the victim that someone in Madurai who had huge sum of black money was ready to give double the amount of money paid to him,” a city police officer said.
Without a second thought, Sivasubramani came in his car with ₹ 3 lakh for doubling through exchanging.
He had stayed in a lodge near the district court. One of them contacted him over phone and asked him to come out in his car. Then he got into the car and drover for some distance.
Later, they started walking on the road near the Corporation swimming pool in Tallakulam. Even as they were walking, a man with a bag was seen roaming around.
The victim was told that the other man was carrying ₹ 6 lakh of black money to be handed over to him.
Sivasubramani readily handed over ₹3 lakh to the first person who suddenly vanished in a motorbike that picked him up.
The man with “bagful of money” then signalled him to go to his car for secretly handing over the black money.
Even as they were walking, suddenly three persons came close to them in two motorbikes. They started to shout at the duo asking as to who they were in a threatening tone.
Even as Sivasubramani got a jerk and was in a confused state, the other man got into one of the bikes and all four escaped from the scene with the bag.
Only then the man realised that he had been duped of his money.
Later, he lodged a complaint with Tallakulam police who started to trace one person identified through a video footage of CCTV. Later, they arrested five persons, two from Madurai, one from Samayanallur, and one each from Thoothukudi and Sivaganga district.
The police have recovered the money and seized two motorbikes and a car used for the crime.
