The State government will start establishing over 3,000 new anganwadis as soon as the Union government clears the proposal, Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar said on Friday.

She was responding to a question by member Thippeswami on behalf of Jawarai Gowda in the Legislative Council here.

The Minister for Women and Child Welfare said that the State government forwarded a proposal to the Union government in 2022.

“The new centres will be set up in various districts as soon as the approvals are received,” she said.

“The approval of the Union government is required to start new anganwadi centers. I have met the Union Minister for Women and Child Welfare Annapurna Devi three times and requested her to give approval to our request,” Ms. Hebbalkar said.

A grant of ₹22.92 crore has been released in the last two years for the construction of new buildings. Work on 337 anganwadi buildings has been already completed, she said.

The Department of Women and Child Welfare has written to the Education Department to provide space in school buildings to run anganwadis. In several villages, anganwadis are being run in school buildings, without disturbing the school routine, Ms. Hebbalkar said.
