Mangaluru councillors say there is a need to review solid waste management

by · The Hindu

Some councillors of the Mangaluru City Corporation said on Thursday that there is a need to review solid waste management in the city.

Raising the matter in the monthly meeting of the city corporation council, Naveen R. D’Souza, Congress councillor and former Leader of the Opposition, said that black spots have returned at many places in the city.

The health section in the corporation is not bothered to address this growing issue. Once the city was free of black spots. But now it is full of black spots, he said.

Mr. D’Souza said that street sweeping is not happening in many wards and storm-water drains have not been cleaned. Grass cutting is also not happening.

Keshava, councillor from Maroli ward, said that garbage is being lifted from his ward once in four days and not daily. When he checked with the corporation, he was told that it was owing to some pourakarmikas going on unplanned leave.

Commissioner C.L. Anand said that there was no major problem in solid waste management in the city.

Biometric attendance of pourakarmikas is taken at 14 places twice. About 60% to 70% biometric attendance is being recorded daily, he said.

Y. Bharat Shetty, Mangaluru City North MLA, asked the corporation to chalk out a plan to use treated sewage water. It could be based on the Nagpur model.

The MLA said that the Nagpur model has been successful for the past eight years. He said that industries can use treated water and it can be used for construction purposes. The corporation should have a plan to earn revenue by using the treated water, Dr. Shetty said.

The MLA said that if treated sewage water is used the corporation can save more clean water for supplying for drinking purposes in the summer. It will be a solution to the scarcity of drinking water during summer.
