AIADMK councillors against naming new council hall after former CM Karunanidhi

by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduAll India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) councillors on Tuesday staged a walkout from the Dindigul Corporation council meeting after a resolution was passed to name the council hall after former Chief Minister and DMK leader M. Karunanidhi.
The meeting was chaired by Mayor Ilamathi Jothiprakash. Deputy Mayor S. Rajappa, Corporation Commissioner N. Ravichandran and other officials participated.
AIADMK councillors led by their leader C.S. Rajmohan protested against the move to name the council hall after the late DMK leader. The name of the council hall in the previous building was MGR Maamandra Koodam and it should be retained in the council hall in the present building also, he said.
CPI (M) councillor S. Ganesan said that Cauvery water should be supplied to all the wards as there was irregular flow from Athoor Kamarajar dam. The authorities said that the issue would be looked into and resolved.
Raising concerns over maintenance of a tank on Siluvathur Road, BJP Councillor G. Dhanabalan said that the officials should remove waste from the tank. DMK councillor A. John Peter urged the authorities to take steps to clean the tank.
Mr. Rajmohan said that roads in Dindigul were dusty and unmotorable and steps should be taken to repair them. The Mayor said that the mechanical sweeper would be put into use after the maintenance work was completed.
DMK Councillor C. Janakiraman said that the approach road to Govindapuram crematorium had not been relaid even nine months after the work was initiated and urged the authorities to look into the issue.
Mr. John Peter said that when there was a proposal to demolish the Flower Market building and construct a new one, what is the point in renewal of licence of the shops. The Deputy Mayor reprimanded the officials and said that the issue would be looked into.
AIADMK councillor S. Baskaran urged the authorities to take up dengue prevention measures such as fogging and to desilt storm water drains to prevent waterlogging.
Mr. Ganesan pointed to the stray cattle menace in the city and urged the authorities to take action against the cattle owners. The Mayor said that a meeting was already held with cattle owners and appropriate action would be taken.
A total of 98 resolutions were passed at the meeting.
