Torso of a 32-year-old man was found at Irattai Vaical in Mettu Mahadhanapuram near here on Tuesday.

Acting on information by a passer-by that a torso was found, the Lalapettai police rushed to the spot and conducted an inquiry.

The body had severe deep cuts, possibly due to stabbing. A blood stained shirt and a dhoti were found about 100 metres from the body. However, the police could not locate the head of the victim in about 1-km radius of the scene of crime. Following this, the police in Kulithalai and Karur were alerted. Forensic personnel and a sniffer dog were pressed into service.

On suspicion that the head of the victim could have been thrown in the Cauvery, the Fire and Rescue Services personnel were involved in the search.

The police suspected that the victim could be a history sheeter belonging to Aravakurichi. However, they said that the identity could be clearly established only after the recovery of the head.

A murder case was registered based on a complaint by a Village Administrative Officer. The body was taken to the Government Medical College Hospital in Karur.
