Atul Subhash case: Wife, family members arrested, brought to Bengaluru

Atul Subhash was found dead at his residence in Bengaluru on December 9; he had left a note and video making a series of allegations against his wife

The Marathahalli police, investigating the death of 34-year-old Atul Subhash, arrested on Saturday (December 14, 2024) his wife, her mother and brother for allegedly abetting his death.

Subhash was was found dead at his residence in Munekollala in Bengaluru on December 9.

Nikita Singhania, wife of Atul, her mother Nisha Singhania and brother Anurag Singhania, were the persons who were arrested. A fourth suspect, Sushil Singhania, Nikita’s uncle, is yet to be arrested and efforts are on to secure him, the police said.

Several teams had been dispatched to track down the persons, who were on the run. While one team found Nikita at a paying guest accommodation in Gurugram, Haryana, her mother and brother were nabbed by another team of police in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, DCP, Whitefield division, Shivakumar Gunare said.

“The accused have been brought to Bengaluru and sent to judicial custody after being produced before a local court,” said a police officer. The accused have been booked under section 108 (abetment to suicide) of BNS. Efforts are on to track down Nikita’s uncle who is on the run, added the police.

‘Justice not served yet’

Meanwhile, Pawan Kumar Modi, the father of the deceased, has demanded the authorities concerned to reunite them with their grandson. The child, according to the police, is under the custody of their relatives.

Speaking to the media from his hometown in Uttar Pradesh, he thanked the police for their efforts and demanded strict punishment for the accused.

“We have demanded the authorities concerned to hand over our grandson to us and we will wait for justice to be served and not dispose the mortal remains of Atul until then. That was his last wish and we also want action against the magistrate who played a vital role in the case and forced Atul to take extreme step,” Mr. Modi alleged.

Case background

In a note and video, Subhash, who was heading the AI division in a tech company, made a series of allegations, including harassment, by his wife and her family before taking the extreme step.

The issue snowballed into a controversy as many organisations raised concern over what they called “misuse of laws” related to dowry harassment and domestic violence.
