Outpatient services were suspended from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on December 17 at private hospitals/clinics in Tiruvarur district because of a “12-hour bandh” called by the Indian Medical Association in the district.

According to sources, the IMA units in Thiruthuraipoondi, Vedaranyam, Tiruvarur, Mannargudi, and Needamangalam in Tiruvarur district called for “bandh” in support of their demand to take action against the accused arrested in connection with an attack on a private hospital at Thiruthuraipoondi on December 10.

A group of persons was arrested on December 10, the day on which it attacked a private hospital at Thiruthuraipoondi and the arrested were released on bail on the same day.

Aggrieved by the grant of bail to the arrested, the IMA units demanded the police to register the case under the provisions of Tamil Nadu Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss to Property) Act, 2008. The “attackers” had committed a cognisable and non-bailable offence and initiating legal proceedings under the Act would enable the hospital to receive compensation from the “attackers” towards the damages they had caused to the institution, sources added.

Members of the IMA units converged at Thiruthuraipoondi on Tuesday morning and staged a demonstration near the Old Bus Stand in support of their demand.
