With Council members cutting across party lines supporting the proposal for creation of separate municipal corporation for Dharwad, the monthly council meeting of Hubballi Dharwad Municipal Corporation on Friday passed a resolution in support of the long pending demand of the residents of Dharwad.

After the councillors unanimously supported the move, Mayor Ramanna Badiger directed the officials to expedite the process to submit the requisite proposal to the State government. The people of Dharwad have been demanding bifurcation of the Hubballi Dharwad Municipal Corporation for years and their grouse was that under the twin city municipal corporation Dharwad was getting poor treatment.

The idea of bifurcating the municipal corporation was first mooted by former Mayor Pandurang Patil in 2012 as a plan to get separate funds for the development of Dharwad. Ever since there have been several meetings and agitations over the issue.

Participating in the discussion, former Mayor Shivu Hiremath, who is from Dharwad, said that the city met all the parameters required for creation of a municipal corporation. He also pointed out that in the draft proposal, HDMC Commissioner Ishwar Ullagaddi had mentioned same. Opposition party leader Raju Kamati, Iresh Anchatageri, Kavita Kabber and others too spoke in favour of the move and urged the officials to expedite the process of  submitting the proposal to the government.

Meanwhile speaking to presspersons at Kittur in Belagavi district on Friday, Dharwad MLA Vinay Kulkarni said that he had already spoken to the Chief Minister on the issue of creating separate municipal corporation for Dharwad and would raise the issue during the winter session in Belagavi.
