Thoothukudi Corporation has sought the approval of the council to float tenders for four shops built at the free rest house constructed for devotees going on padayatra to Tiruchendur.

It was proposed at the council meeting presided over by Mayor Jegan Periyasamy on Friday, where a total of 19 resolutions were passed. The corporation passed a resolution permitting street vendors in 11 earmarked locations within the corporation limits.

To protect the livelihood of street vendors and to regulate the norms of street vending in Thoothukudi, the corporation has selected the 11 locations which include Tamil Salai (in front of Rajaji Park and opposite cemetery), Chidambara Nagar Road, Boobalarayerpuram, Harbour Construction Road, Beach Road, North Beach Road, Housing Board Service Road, Ettayapuram Road and Toovipuram Main Road.

The corporation has also sought the approval from the council for shops built in the rest house constructed in ward 60 of south zone on Tiruchendur Main Road with amenities such as toilets, bathrooms and rest area for padayatris to Tiruchendur. Approval was also sought for 11 shops constructed near omni bus stand to float tenders for their operation.

Councilors from various wards raised demands, including installation of complaint boxes in schools, colleges, and private firms to ensure women safety, expediting measures to prevent health hazard in ward 51 due to sewage overflow, restoring broken drinking water pipelines, cancellation of 1% penalty imposed on delayed tax payments, stagnation of rainwater in low-lying areas and upgradation of urban health centres.

The Mayor said that water stagnation in low-lying areas, especially in wards 16, 17, and 18 are due to vacant plots which accounted for about 30% of the area. He also noted that three additional urban health centres will be established for the benefit of the people. He outlined a plan to upgrade Muthu Nagar Park and Roche Park. He further said that surveillance cameras had been installed in most of the areas in the city to ensure safety of women.

Corporation Commissioner L. Madhubalan and Deputy Mayor S. Jenita were present at the meeting.
