Uphold sanctity of the Constitution, urges Governor

The foresight of the architects of the Constitution was exemplified by Article 3 which facilitated creation of Telangana State, said Governor Vishnu Dev Varma on Tuesday.

Speaking at the Constitution Day-2024 celebrations at Telangana High Court premises, the Governor said the creation of Telangana was testament to the Constitution’s ability to address aspirations of regional identity while securing national unity and integrity. The Governor called upon people to reaffirm unwavering commitment to Constitution while commemorating Constitution Day.

He recalled the observations of the Constitutional Draft Committee chairperson Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who said that Constitution would turn bad, however good it may be, if persons implementing it were not good. A bad Constitution may turn out to be good if those enforcing it were good. “It is therefore incumbent upon us, as citizens of this great nation, to uphold the sanctity of the Constitution and ensure its proper implementation,” the Governor said.

Telangana High Court Chief Justice Alok Aradhe said the relevance of the Constitution had only deepened as the people stand at the crossroads of rapid global and technological changes.  “Issues like privacy in the digital age, climate justice, gender equity and inclusive growth throw challenges to the judiciary to interpret and apply the Constitution with creativity and foresight,” he said. Observing that the Supreme Court had acted as custodian of the Constitution, the CJ cited verdicts of the apex court. The SC, while interpreting right to life and liberty under Article 21, included the facets like right to privacy, right to live with dignity, right to clean environment, right to shelter, right to health and right to education as important rights guaranteed by the Constitution.
