Congress to legally fight simultaneous elections: Venugopal

AICC general secretary says decisions on all important issues are taken after holding consultations with all the Congress leaders in the State

All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary K.C. Venugopal on Sunday said that the Congress will legally fight the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) policy of ‘one nation one election.’

Speaking to media here, he said that such an idea was impractical and the Congress will oppose the bill onone nation and one election in the Parliament. He pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not say anything new in the Constitutional debate and what he said was just a repetition of his previous speeches. He had used the debate to attack the Congress. He alleged that the Prime Minister did not have any sincerity and loyalty towards the Constitution. He sidestepped the questions raised by the Congress on inequality and injustice faced by the people of the country. Nor did his speech mention Manipur, which has been in turmoil for over a year and a half and the alleged black money racket run by Gautam Adani and his associates. The Opposition was able to highlight State terrorism, anti-democratic actions, and human rights violations in the country during the discussion.

Mr. Venugopal said that the decisions on all important issues were taken after holding consultations with all the Congress leaders in the State. In fact, the party had got a mechanism to address the grievances of the party workers. The AICC general secretary also denied the reports that he had held talks with Nilambur MLA P.V. Anwar. It was for the State Congress leaders to take a call on Mr. Anwar’s entry into the Congress, he added.
