Karnataka winter session: Assembly sees marathon session stretching till nearly 1 a.m.

by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduThe Karnataka Legislative Assembly witnessed a marathon session on Monday (December 16, 2024), transacting till 12.50 a.m. of Tuesday (December 17, 2024) in Belagavi. The session that began around 10.30 a.m. went on till the wee hours of Tuesday, which included lunch break for an hour.
The House took up the question hour late in the night. Revenue Minister Krishna Byregowda replied on behalf of the government on not just revenue issues, but also regarding almost all other subjects including the Finance Department.
In all, 60 calling attention notices, 15 questions, three medium-term debates and 11 bills were taken up by the House since evening.
Though the Opposition BJP hailed Speaker U.T. Khader for the gesture of completing all the issues on the day’s agenda through a marathon session, some leaders sarcastically remarked that he should declare himself “best MLA of the year.”
Cooperation of ruling party and Oppn
Later, the Speaker told a private TV channel that the main intention behind having an extended session was to complete all the subjects that were part of the agenda. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Leader of the Opposition R. Ashok had co-operated with him when he had a telephonic discussion with them about the plan, he said. He also pointed out that the ruling party members had co-operated with the Opposition members by allowing them to take up their issues first, as the latter had to attend a meeting.
The Assembly secretariat is yet to officially confirm whether Monday’s marathon session has set a new record as the House had continued to transact beyond 1 a.m. on earlier occasions too. However, the House had started late back then.
