A seminar on One Nation One Election, jointly organised by the departments of History and Political Science of CMS College in Kottayam in association with the Institute of Parliamentary Affairs under the State government here on Tuesday, observed that One Nation, One Election is impractical and poses a threat to federalism.

Inaugurating the seminar at CMS College on Tuesday, Puthuppally MLA Chandy Oommen said in a diverse country like India, the idea of having simultaneous elections was simply not feasible. He also warned that such a system could potentially lead to autocratic tendencies over time.

Delivering the keynote address, G. Gopakumar, former Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Kerala, mentioned that the concept of One Nation One Election would undermine the fabric of federalism. “It will lead to regional issues gradually being sidelined over national issues. Regional parties will lose their significance over due course of time,” he said.

K.M. Seethi, Director of the Inter University Centre for Social Science Research and Extension, chaired the seminar. S. Anandan, Deputy Editor of The Hindu, and Biveesh U.C. , Director of the Institute of Parliamentary Affairs, also spoke.
