The Communist Party of India ( Marxist) has flayed the AINRC-BJP government for being silent on the demand for Statehood for Puducherry.

Addressing a press conference to announce the 24th State conference of the Puducherry unit of CPI(M), party secretary R. Rajangam said the AINRC and BJP have remained silent on the Statehood issue after both the parties formed a coalition government in Puducherry in 2021. The government has failed to take up the Statehood demand with the Centre, he said.

The Puducherry government failed to take any steps to reopen textile mills. The textile mills in Puducherry were the main source of employment opportunities and their closure has led to huge unemployment problem in the Union Territory, he said.

The party also criticised the government for its lack of interest in reviving the Cooperative sector in the Union Territory. Around 200 delegates from Puducherry and Karaikal regions will be attending the party’s two-day conference on November 30 and December 1.
